Nine and ten year old students at University Lake School work on boxes all year long, by looking at consumer boxes and seeing that they are made flat. Then they make their own boxes, starting with cubes and pyramids and then moving onto dodecahedrons and more. All are made from one large or small piece of paper.
The visual literacy, problem-solving and geometry skills they learn are unmatched. Give the video a look, and then check out the boxes below. If you want to try it in your classroom, read the PDF file below, and/or give me a call, text or tweet for more help. Kids absolutely love this project and they learn a ton. It can be fit into the day and your math instruction. Please give it a try - you will be amazed what it can turn into for your students.
